Pour notre première exposition de l’année 2006, exposition collective, j’ai choisi un titre inspiré d’un texte de Dostoïevski mettant en scène un personnage qui, réfugié dans son sous-sol, ne cesse de conspuer l’humaine condition pour prôner son droit à la liberté. Au delà du caractère imprécatoire de ce texte magnifiquement lu par Patrick Chéreau il y a peu au théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, j’ai voulu réunir quelques artistes qui me paraissent s’inscrire dans la réalité quotidienne du monde (ici-bas) et en même temps nous inviter à regarder l’avenir (souvent avec optimisme), en toute liberté.

Plusieurs artistes de la galerie participent à ce projet: Allan Sekula dont nous avons choisi de présenter une image de la série Black Tide/ Marea Negra réalisée en 2002 lors du naufrage du pétrolier Prestige au large des côtes de Galice ; Jimmie Durham avec deux oeuvres nées d’une performance réalisée à la galerie en 2004 (Jimmie Durham participera à la prochaine Biennale du Whitney, vernissage le 2 mars prochain).
Dora Garcia nous propose une de ses “phrases d’or”, oeuvre murale à mi-chemin entre l’aphorisme, le “statement” artistique et le commandement moral. Plusieurs expositions importantes ont permis de découvrir le travail de Dora Garcia ces dernières années : Manifesta Luxembourg (1998) et biennale d’Istanbul (2003), ainsi que ses expositions personnelles : The Kingdom, MACBA (2003), Vibraciones MUSAC, Leon (2005), et Des messages, des instructions, des questions, Frac Bourgogne (2005). Il y a quelques jours encore, ses performances et vidéos bénéficiaient d’une présentation très complète à la Reina Sofia à Madrid. Dora Garcia, dans une relation intime ou distante, pousse le spectateur à l’interprétation et à la remise en cause de la réalité.

Invité de la galerie, Claude Lévêque présente une œuvre inédite, phrase en tubes de néon industriel suspendue dans l’espace. Ces fragments d’une histoire personnelle, à l’écriture familière, puisent dans la rumeur du monde. L’artiste l’exprime ainsi « je cherche à mettre en phase ce que produit l'univers des loisirs et l'amnésie presque totale qui nous caractérise. »
Une sculpture de Franz West dans cette exposition, Passstück, 1978, témoigne de l’attitude de l’artiste à la fois anti-utopique et anti-idéaliste.

A ces oeuvres s’ajoute Ten Men de Mark Raidpere. La découverte de cet artiste dans le pavillon estonien fut pour moi le moment fort de la dernière biennale de Venise. Depuis lors, je souhaitais montrer à Paris cet artiste de 30 ans, vivant à Tallinn. « Ten Men, oeuvre vidéographique réalisée lors d’une séance photo avec quelques détenus, dévoile l’intérêt de l’artiste pour la prison comme espace de refus social. » (Hanno Soans, communiqué de presse, 51ème biennale de Venise)

For our first exhibition of 2006 (a group show), I have chosen the title of a text by Dostoyevsky (Notes from underground) staging a character who disparages the human soul to assert his right to freedom, while sheltering in a basement. Beyond the imprecatory tone of this text (recently read by Patrick Chéreau at the Bouffes du Nord Theater in Paris), I would like to gather some artists who seem to tackle the daily reality of the world while inviting us to look into the future (most often optimistically) in total freedom.

Some artists of the gallery will take part to this project: Allan Sekula, with an image of the photographic series Black Tide/ Marea Negra made in 2002, in the aftermath of the Prestige shipwreck on the Galician coasts; Jimmie Durham with two works made from a performance at the gallery in 2004 (Jimmie Durham will be participating to the next Whitney Biennial, opening March 2.)
Dora Garcia will present one of her “golden sentences”, wall installation between the aphorism, the artistic statement and the moral command. Many important exhibitions disclosed Dora Garcia’s works in the recent years: Manifesta Luxembourg (1998) and Istanbul biennale (2003), as well as her solo shows: The Kingdom, MACBA (2003), Vibraciones, MUSAC, Leon (2005) and Des messages, des instructions, des questions, Frac Bourgogne (2005). A few days ago, it was still possible to see a comprehensive survey of her performances and videos at the Museo Nacional Reina Sofia, Madrid. In an intimate or distant relationship to the beholder, Dora Garcia pushes him/her into the interpretation or the questioning of reality.

Claude Lévêque, a guest of the gallery, will present an original work: a sentence made of industrial neon tubes and hung in space. These fragments of a personal story, written with a certain familiarity, draw on the world rumour. The artist expresses it in the following fashion: “I am trying to put into sentences what the leisure universe and the almost total amnesia that characterizes us can produce.”
A sculpture by Franz West in this exhibition (Passstück, 1978) testifies to the artist’s anti-utopian and anti-idealistic attitude.

Ten Men by Mark Raidpere will be a meaningful complement to this exhibition. Discovering the artist in the Estonian pavilion was to me the most important moment of the last Venice Biennale. From then on, I have wished to show this Tallinn-based 30-year-old artist in Paris. “Ten Men, a videowork made during a photo shoot with some inmates, unveils the artist’s interest for prison as a space of social refusal.” (Hanno Soans, press release, 51st Venice Biennale)
